I was just wondering if there are any followers of this beautiful goddess here in Neopaganworld. I do know that she is the primordial goddess of the night. From what I've found, she's in the same teir as Chaos, Gaia, Uranus, Erebus, and so on. Or if there is a goddess that is equal to her let me know. I know different cultures had different names for this goddess. If you are a worshipper, can you help me out? Blessed Be!

Wow I am surprised no one really knows Nyx.... Floyda, could there be other names this Goddess is know by?
well she is the goddess of night, that's all I know.
Every so often, she's looked to also as Gaia in the same.

Hi Everyone! I know it's been awhile since I've been around (lost my access to the original e-mail!) I've been doing some reading and I found that

  • Itzpapalotl - fearsome skeletal goddess of the stars (Aztec)
  • Nephthys, goddess of night as well as death and birth (Egyptian)
  • Ratri, goddess of night (Hindu)
  • Breksta, goddess of twilight and dreams, who protects people from sunset to sunrise (Lithuanian)
  • Hine-nui-te-pō, goddess of night and death and the ruler of the underworld (Maori)
  • Nótt, female personification of night (Norse)
  • Nox, primordial goddess of night; equivalent to the Greek goddess Nyx (Roman)

All these goddesses are the same as our wonderful Mother Goddess Nyx!

And here's the list of Greek night deities:

  • Asteria, goddess of nocturnal oracles and falling stars
  • Erebus, primordial god of darkness and consort of Nyx
  • Hecate, goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, moon, ghosts and necromancy
  • Nyx, primordial goddess of night
  • Achlys, primordial goddess of eternal night, misery and sorrow
  • Artemis, goddess of the moon, hunting, and young women. associated with the night.

Hmmm, well with that being so, I would recommend you do a little research on Hecate. She may be a similar or the same Goddess. I'm not familiar with Nyx myself, but I understand how throughout ancient history there have been 'adoptions' of Goddesses by different groups of people and sometimes this means the name of the Goddess changes but in the worship her energy imbues the same or almost the same properties as the former which she 'evolved/adoped' from. So maybe Hecate will resonate with you. There is certainly a lot of information about her on the web for you to probably determine this. Good luck!
Thanks Rebecca! I will most definitely look into her. Blessings!
Thanks Erik! I'm going to follow up on your info as soon as I can. Blessings!
where and what would you like to begin with?
go to Hecate first. then once you know Hecate, you can then Know of Nyx.
those of a noctournal nature are often said to have the goddess Nox in them, who is the othername for Nyx. she watches over the night and blankets the sky with darkness to permit sleep and dreams. at the same time she also allows the creatures of the underworld, who are normally sensitive to the Brightness that Sol provides, to emerge and do their work, as the mortals of the world take rest.
you are awesome. My family constantly says how serious a night owl I am, and I hate mornings. Not to mention, I would love to get married at sunset, I'm fascinated with werewolves and vampires, and well, I figured that maybe one of the night goddesses/gods would work. I just need someone local to help me out more. Thanks again!
Nyx is a beautiful Goddess and if your intrested I'll tell you the story.

Long before the gods appeared, in the dim past, uncounted ages ago, there was only the formless confusion of Chaos, brooded over by unbroken darkness. At last, though no one ever tried to explain it, two children were born to this shapeless nothingness. Night was the child of Chaos and so was Erebus, which is the unfathomable depth where death dwells.

'...Black-winged Night
Into the bosom of Erebus dark and deep
Laid a wind-born egg, and the seasons rolled
Forth sprang Love, the longed-for , shining, with wings of gold.'
An Exert from Mythology by Edith Hamilton

You are correct when you say Nyx is the ancient personification of Night, and Erebus her consort. The male and female. Nyx has threw the centuries been called many other things like Gaia, the Mother Earth, Medicine woman (from native American tribes) and things of the like. They were the first true Goddess and God every created. From them grew love, and was born Father Heaven and Mother Earth,(Gaea and Ouranos). and from them the first creatures born were monsters. Then the Titans then the Greek Gods like Hecate.

Now Hecate was more to be concidered the Goddess Artemis, as she was called "the goddess of three forms" Selene the sky, Artemis on earth, and Hecate in the lower world and in the world above when it is wrapped in darkness.
Hecate was the Goddess of the Dark of the Moon, the black nights when the moon is hidden. Also known at the Goddess of crossways. Though perception of her has changed, Hecate was associated with deeds done in the dark and dark magic.

That should help. But don't just take my words for it. Look into it for yourself.
May the Goddess truly bless you! I read Theogany, but I've been having a hard time finding resources on this divine goddess. I don't even know where to start.
