Have you ever had an inkling that you were going to stumble upon a valuable book? I had this feeling yesterday when I made my decision to head to BookStock 2010, a huge used book fair in Livonia, Michigan. As it turned out, I wasn't able to attend until today, which was the last day of the sale, and I didn't leave until late due to my wife getting back late from grocery shopping. By the time I got there, I had only about 2 hours to comb through literally thousands of used books before the sale closed.
Many of the books I had been hoping to find were there (which is somewhat magical in itself), but there was one book that I had hardly dared hope for. Under the table, in a box full of old college textbooks, was the hardcover 1973 edition of Aleister Crowley's Magick, printed in Great Britain. The book was in excellent shape. I felt like Johnny Depp's character in The 9th Gate!
Due to today being the last day of the sale, I got it for half off the regular hardcover book fair price of $4. So, I paid $2. Looking up the ISBN in the "Used and Rare" section of BarnesandNoble.com this evening, I find that this book is selling for up to $115 by private dealers! Not that I'll EVER sell it!
I haven't started reading it yet, but I've thumbed through it, marveling at the diagrams. Fascinating!
I've had this experience several times in my life, not only with books, but with other events as well, and I always pay attention to this when it happens.
