It started allright then it became a christian propaganda.The archaeologists still searching for the historical Jesus.Check out the book Against Celsus.Celsus was a Greek writer in the second century who criticized Christianity as a threat to the "pagan" religious and social system sought to uphold. His work as a whole has been put into fire, but when the theologian Origen sought to answer Celsus' charges in a work appropriately called "Against Celsus" he preserved most of Celsus' criticisms
