In ancient history it often happened that when an imperialist culture like that of Greece or Rome expanded into new territory, they were careful not to offend the deities of the people living there. This was bad form for one thing, sacrereligious for another, and wise as a policy. If they liked these particular deities they were absorbed into their own pantheon, hence the mulitiplicity of names and titles for the Greco-Roman divinities.
Aphrodite is clearly a foreign import (most likely as a form of Astarte), but in Greek myth she was of the third generation of the gods, that is, Gaia was her grandmother and mother. As such she is older than Zeus.
She is Ambologera, She who postpones old age, presumably through intercourse;
She is Amphritite, Anadyomene (arising from the sea) Antheia, the flowery (cf the anthers of a flower),
Apaturia (deceitful, this is because she deceived the giants to help Hercules overcome them);
She is Apotrophia, the expeller of lust. Yet she is a goddess of love and lust. The key here is that she controls desire.
She is Areia, warlike, Aphrodite-Ariadne, She who rides astride, Basilis, Queen; Callypigos (beautiful buttocks). she was triune in the form of the Charites, the Graces, and had four attendants, the Horae, who were the seasons; Comaetho, the bright or golden haired (she was a blonde); Diacosmos, Goddess of the Cosmos, Dione (Zeus's mother or one of his four wives), Eleemon, the Merciful, Epitragia, astride a billy goat, Epitymbidia, of the tombs, Eulopia, of good sailing, Aphrodite Federalis, Galatea, the milk giving goddess, Galenia, of the calm sea, Genetyllis, protector of childbirth, Hedone, Lust (As Venus she coupled with Mars and had a daughter named Volupta, Pleasure), Aphrodite Hera, Hetaira, the courtesan or whore (temple, that is), Justice, Maia, (Spring), married to Hephaestus, Melenaiis, the black, Moira, Fate, Morpho, the Shape Shifter, Nicephorous (or Nike), Victory, Nympaea, bridal; She who opens herself up, Pandemos, of the people, Pantheia, the Universal Goddess, Pasiphaessa, the far shining, Peeping Aphrodite (she used to enjoy peeping in on the nude athletes in the gymnasiums), Peitho, Persuasion, Philia, Love or Friendship,
Philommeides, smile or penis loving, Porne, Prospiciens (far-seeing); Theia (Goddess), Terpsis, Pleasure; Tyche, Fortune (hence Lady Luck), Urania (Heavenly), and this does not include her Roman names as Venus.
