Recently I've been having "arguements" with another Pagan, not Wiccan, on another website. She claims that Wiccans must be in a coven to be real Wiccans. I'm not exactly sure if that is true. I know the 161 laws say that we have to be in a coven. However there a book such as, "Wicca, a Guide for the Solitary Practitioner" and I don't remember the name of another book that says it is okay to be solitary but you should try to find a coven. What do you think? Can Wiccans be solitary?
Do you have to have a sibling in order to be a person?
A witch a wiccan /wize one, some are awaken to there birth rite unafraid to go into the secret realms of the earth the only one of their family's generation.
Its not hard to see your friend is wrong, just making self righteous statements for the hell of it.
I am not Wiccan, but it would certainly be difficult to find a coven if there is none around. Besides that, for many years, there would only be a single hedge witch for each village. And, always, you must find people you are comfortable with for any kind of working.

the book was written by Scott Cunningham and it's the first book I bought. I just feel comfortable with covens. Most defiantly wiccans be solitary. For people like me, covens can be overwhelming, claustrophobic. Plus I feel like I get better results being an eclectic solitary
The only help that you get from a coven is support limited knowledge and likemindedness and even thats not true in all covens. solitarys have acess to the same knowledge they just prefer to work alone. By choice or situation. One is not more powerful than the other no matter what anyone says the magic lies within ones self not ones group of friends.

There are certain types of Wicca that are "initiatory" paths, usually complete with a degree system.... It would be kinda hard to be solitary and follow one of those types of the religion....lol Perhaps these are what your friend is referring to. There are several books for the Solitary witch. Witch-crafting by Phyllis Curott has specific exercises for the lone practicer. The ultimate BOS for the solitary was written by Silver Ravenwolf, Witchcraft and Practical magick also has many references for the Solitary. In Bucklands encyclopedia of witchcraft aka the Big Blue Book there is a Self- Dedication ritual for those who practice alone. Your right, shes wrong.
Each of us is his or her own person. Being a celtic shaman - I believe that a person is strongest alone. No one to disagree with ones beliefs and no one to bother you when you are in meditation to do OBE. If you are into being alone on your trips to other realms or with a friend it is best not to be in a coven. Covens I believe are for those who are afraid to test the waters of paganism alone and are not very strong. Once you gain your own identity and have your powers, I say go for it for fun that is, but keep yourself to yourself. If you are a person of power there are always those who want your power. A true pagan can cause no negetivity in the world and be true to the gods and goddesses
What makes a Wiccan and or Witch? It is simply this... A dedication to the Goddess and God, following the Wiccan Rede, and following the rule of three. If that is your choice path and you honor it then you are a Wiccan...alone or with others. Yes there are more details involved but that covers a lot.
I also am Pagan but not Wiccan. If I were Wiccan... I can't think of how a coven would be created around here. I live in the bible belt... and frankly most people still believe in the archaic "if you don't understand it .. HATE IT". lol There just aren't that many people who are willing to stand up and stand out as Pagans.
I can relate to that. I'm not sure where the 'bible belt' is, but I live in a deeply religious good ol' boy town, prominently baptist and methodist. For all my searching, online and otherwise, I've only met two active pagans in my area.
